5 Dead In East River Helicopter Crash

THOUSANDS ARE FINALLY WAKING UP WITH POWER. FIVE PEOPLE KILLED AFTER A HELICOPTER CRASHES INTO THE EAST RIVER NEAR ROOSEVELT ISLAND. THE PILOT IS THE ONLY SURVIVOR IN THE CRASH. THE NTSB IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE THIS MORNING TO BEGIN ITS INVESTIGATION. THE CHOPPER REMAINS IN THE WATER THIS MORNING, JANELLE? Reporter: CHRIS AND MARY, YOU CAN SEE THAT NYPD POLICE BOAT HERE BEHIND US, KEEPING WATCH OVER THAT HELICOPTER, WHICH IS STILL SUBMERGED. AFTER IT HIT THE WATER, THE HELICOPTER ENDED UP, UPSIDE DOWN WITH THE PASSENGERS TRAPPED INSIDE. MAYDAY, MAYDAY. Reporter: CELL PHONE VIDEO SHOWING THE FINAL MOMENTS BEFORE THE PRIVATE CHARTER HELICOPTER PLUNGED INTO THE EAST RIVER JUST BEFORE 7:00 SUNDAY EVENING. THE PILOT AND FIVE PASSENGERS ON BOARD BECAME SUBMERGED. THIS MORNING INVESTIGATORS FROM THE NTSB BEGIN THE WORK OF TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT HAPPENED. IT LOOKED LIKE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE LANDING ALMOST, SO I WASN’T REALLY SURE. THEN THE MOMENT WE SAW IT LAND, IT WAS UNDER. Reporter: DOZENS OF 911 CALLS SENT POLICE, FIRE AND COAST GUARD RESCUE BOATS ASIAN TO THE SCENE NEAR EAST 90TH — RACING TO THE SCENE, NEAR EAST 90TH STREET, TRYING TO LOCATE THE HELICOPTER. THE HELICOPTER IS SUBMERGED. WE HAVE NO EXACT LOCATIONS ANY MORE. Reporter: AUTHORITIES SAY THE PILOT, SEEN HERE WITH EMERGENCY RESPONDERS, MANAGED TO FREE HIMSELF, BUT HIS FIVE PASSENGERS WHO WERE HARNESSED IN BECAUSE OF THE SHOOT, WERE TRAPPED. THE FIVE PEOPLE BESIDES THE PILOT WERE ALL TIGHTLY HARNESSED. SO THESE HARNESSED HAD TO BE CUT AND REMOVED IN ORDER TO GET THESE FOLKS OFF THE HELICOPTER. Reporter: TWO WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD, THE OTHER THREE RUSHED TO AREA HOSPITALS IN CRITICAL CONDITION, AND LATER DIED. THE WATER TEMPERATURE AND CONDITIONS MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR DIVERS TO GET TO THE VICTIMS. THEY WORKED QUICKLY, AS FAST AS THEY COULD. THAT IS 50 FEET OF WATER THERE. THERE WAS A 4 MILES PER HOUR CURRENT, THE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW 40s. SO EVERYONE WORKED VERY HARD. Reporter: LIBERTY HELICOPTERS HAS HAD TWO PREVIOUS CRASHES, BOTH IN THE HUDSON RIVER. ONE IN 2007, WHERE THE AIRCRAFT FELL INTO THE WATER AND EVERYONE SURVIVED, AND THE OTHER IN 2009, WHEN ONE OF THEIR CONTINUERS COLLIDED WITH A SMALL PLANE. NINE PEOPLE WERE KILLED. IT WAS DETERMINED IN THAT 2009 CRASH, THE HELICOPTER WAS FLYING TOO HIGH, WHICH IS WHY IT COLLIDED WITH THAT PLANE. AS FOR THIS MOST RECENT ACCIDENT, SO FAR THE NAMES OF
