Horizons Full Playthrough – JonGetsGames

August 21, 2019

welcome to John gates games today I’ll be doing a full 3 player playthrough of horizons in this game each player would take on the role of a spacefaring race whose primary goal it is to expand it out and take control of as many star systems as they can while also working towards a variety of secondary hidden objectives as they’re playing the game every single action they take in the game is good to be drastically amplified by a variety of different allies that they can pick up as they’re playing which will give them interesting combos and specific actions that no one else will have access to until they maybe get that highlight for themselves this game is being funded through Kickstarter and I’ll explain how it actually plays while we’re playing it so let’s go ahead and jump in out on the table we have our three player game of horizons fully set up and ready to play we’ll be playing from the perspective of the pink player here and we are gonna be taking the first turn down here we have our player area and there are several things going on we have this player board here which shows us not only which types of planets we can currently build on that is frozen with this one cube right here but also the different structures that we have yet to build and then over here we have some secret missions this is an ally which will help us do some of the actions and then we start the game with – energy – metal and then one of these knowledge tokens which also count as one victory point at the end of the game when we take an even closer look at our player board we see this action table and it says that on our turn we could take any two actions we can mix or match which means we can take the same one multiple times if we like and there are five different options so I think for our first action let’s take a look at explore it says that we could draw and play one world from the bag and or we could gain one knowledge which again is a victory point at the end of the game if we still have it one of the main reasons we’re doing this is because we started the game with this Oceanic system hidden goal it says that we will get two points at the end of the game if there are three or more oceanic planets around a single star system when we look back to the center of the table we see that there are three star systems in the game it’s always gonna be one per player and at the start there are zero oceanic planets out at all so I figure let’s try and draw one from the bag if we are unable to do that we might actually give up on this goal but this is an okay thing to do anyway because it is gonna give us a victory point with that knowledge so we can pull out this tile right here and we see their double-sided it looks like we unfortunately we’re not able to do this but instead I think let’s go ahead and do this arboreal side to the planets you pick whichever side you like and we can put this down next to any planet we want now we know that there is also a goal for having three of these arboreal planets around a single star it’s in the deck anyway which means one of our opponents might have it so let’s go ahead and just put this around the star that we started out for just to make sure that it’s not gonna accidentally give points to our opponents and lastly we gained the one knowledge to finish out our Explorer action next up we have one more action to do for our turn and I think let’s look at the adapt action it says that you can activate a habitat and/or take one Ally and at the beginning of the game we all start with the same exploration League Ally and if you notice in the bottom left corner we have a symbol this is associated with one of the five different actions and this means that you can activate this ally when you do that matching symbol and since we’re doing adapt it’s very likely we’ll look into using this ally right here and you can actually use them before during or after the activation and I think we’re gonna want to wait until after so let’s go ahead and start by looking over here we can activate a habitat as I mentioned before we started the game with this frozen habitat activated for us this means we have five other options available to us we can do any of them if we want to but looking out in the board we see there are two of these arboreal once in one desert so we should probably pick one or the other and now let’s go ahead and look at it the exploration League the text down at the bottom says that you get to gain one metal or energy per planet in play matching the habitat you activated this action so I think let’s go ahead and activate the arboreal one because there are two of these out there and when we activate our outline we’ll get two resources so in order to do this we simply take one of these little cube tokens and this is probably a good time to mention that this is a prototype version of the game in the final version there will be a little snap in tokens to show which ones of the habitats you’ve actually activated but for now we just have these black cubes and I’ll put that down right here now it is true that our yellow opponent over here started the game with the arboreal habitat activated which means when we put this planet down we gave them even more places that they can build on to but yeah I think this is still probably the right thing for us next up let’s go ahead and activate our ally card and when we do this we actually flip them over and we see that they have the same face on the back except now instead of having this little arrow icon it has a trash can which that when we use this ally again it will be permanently removed from the game so as we talked about before I’m gonna get two resources it could be one and one or two of the same and I think let’s go ahead and take two energy and the reason for this is because when we look out to the habitats over here there are costs associated with building various things and right now we are adapted for the frozen planet which is going to allow us to rather cheaply build these metal collectors but we cannot actually build any of these energy collectors on frozen planets we can over here on arboreal spots but those cost more energy than metal so it’s a minor thing but let’s go ahead and take the energy so that we have a little bit more of that knockin around and lastly we have the option to take an ally card so let’s look at our options now here we could see the five different stacks of alien allies and each are associated with one of the five action options we can start over here with the agram this one says that when you do a harvest action you can then again to energy per system where you share a planet with an opponent and it’s important to note that all the cards in the stack are associated with a harvest action but they all have different actions over here on next up we have the old they are associated with the explore action and it says you can gain a another one of those knowledge and draw and play another planet essentially doubling up on an exploring action that’s very attractive to us considering right now we’re kind of trying to find those oceanic planets next we have the ghetto and these are associated with the adaptability and this one in particular says you could pay to knowledge to immediately gain eight different resources of your choice so you’re spending points but that is a ton of different resources and then over here we have the fresh are this one says when you build you can gain one metal per metal collector you already haven’t play which well we don’t have any of those out yet so we’re not too interested in that one and lastly we have the diagram which says when you do the conspire action which just lets you draw more of those private mission cards as well as allies you can gain one mission per colony you already have in play so again not interesting to us because we haven’t built any of those the last option we have available to us is if we don’t like any of these we can discard the top card to the bottom of the deck and then take whatever card was just revealed but I think let’s go ahead and take this librarian right here we like the idea of being able to essentially do eight explore action twice so we can go ahead and add the librarian into our tableau and it’s worth noting that you’re never allowed to have more than five of these allies in front of you and you’re never allowed to have more than five of these mission cards it’s also worth noting that you can only spend a one Ally per action activation so with this we are now finally done with our turn and play will now pass over to the blue opponent they decide for their first action that they are going to adapt into the arboreal planets as well probably because well we set up this really nice combo right there so they’re gonna go ahead and take this token put it down right there and just like us they’ve decided to flip over their exploration league which is gonna gain them two resources of their choice and they are also gonna grab it to energy after the habitat activation the blue player now gets to grab an ally and they decided they liked the look of this fresh our roughneck which is gonna gain them one metal per metal collector that they have in play when they actually activate them this has gone ahead and uncovered the engineer card which actually gains you metal for each energy collector you have in play which is kind of interesting and now for blues second action they’ve decided that they want to build so when we look at these specifics on our player board right here just because I can’t quite get the camera over there let’s go ahead and see that they can now build a one of these energy collectors or one metal collector which are the squares or one of these colonies up here they’ve decided they want to do a metal collector and they’re gonna do it on the desert planet which is gonna cost one energy and one metal to do so they go ahead and spend those resources and they can then take you there leftmost metal collector right here and you see it reveals a little one just so you remember how many of these you have out and they go ahead and put it over here on the desert planet where you can see there are these three little hexagonal shapes right here now none of the buildings are actually hexagons this is just the symbol to show where any of the buildings can go and that each planet can only have three buildings the actual positioning of the building on the planet does not matter they’ve now considered actually activating this ally right here which is associated with the build action which would get them one metal for each of them metal collectors but they decide to hold on for the moment you only get to activate each Ally twice and they figure maybe they should wait till they have at least one more metal collector before they do that so with that their turn is over and now goes to the yellow player for their first action they’ve decided to go with conspire we can see that this is going to let them at draw either – mission cards or one Ally and one mission and this is the one that yellow decides they want to do this means they go ahead and draw the top one from the mission card stack and now they go to grab an ally but they want to actually push their luck a little bit they’re going to go ahead and discard the top one of these fresh ARS this engineer here which means they are forced to take the one that’s underneath it this one says iron hand it says that you can pay one metal or energy to build a metal collector wow that’s actually a really good ability with that there conspire action is done and they’ve decided for their second action to go ahead and build and use this iron hand right now so they will flip it over which is gonna allow them to spend at one energy or one metal to put a metal collector out and they decide to just spend at the one metal because the metal collector itself is going to allow them to get more metals so they go ahead and take the leftmost one of these and they are only currently adapted into our boreal planet so it has to go down into one of those and they decide to go ahead and put it right there into this system and with that their build action is done and their turn is done so we can now take our second turn of the game We certainly have a couple options available to us right from the get-go we have this ol Oh librarian down here which would essentially allow us to double up on an explorer action which sounds really nice we could really try to dig deep and find those oceanic planets but I think instead there is a better option available to us because well right now we are adapted to both of these planets here and we actually have a sizeable amount of resources I think what we should do is actually build twice and when we look over here we see that on the frozen planet we can only put down the metal extractors and those cost one of each of the two resources and over here on the arboreal planets we can do either/or and it costs two energy and then one metal I think let’s go ahead and kind of split the difference because if you look over here to the harvest action which we have not talked about yet it essentially says that every one of your collectors whether they be energy or metal will generate one of the Associated resource so let’s go ahead and split up we’re gonna send a one over to the frozen planet that’s going to cost these two resources right here and that will be this metal and then for our other action that we will do this energy one right here so that’s going to cost us two of our energy and our last metal and you might be wondering why it makes sense for us to try and do to build actions right now well there’s one thing I haven’t told you yet up to this point all of the build actions have put buildings down on two empty planets and at this point we could hypothetically take this energy collector and put it over here onto this arboreal planet but the thing is that whenever you put a building down onto a planet with an opponent’s building that opponent is going to immediately generate one free resource whether it be energy or metal and because of this I think it makes sense for us to do these to build actions putting the metal one there and the energy collector up there because that means we are getting first dibs essentially on both of these planets so if either opponents it’s designed to build on these spots we will get bonus resources instead of going on to spots that they’ve already gotten to so it’s a slight race but I think it’s worth using our full turn for and with that we can go ahead and move over to the blue player because we don’t have any build allies to use right now they’ve decided to start things off with an explore action so they’re gonna go ahead and pull a tile out of the bag and it looks like it is arboreal and oceanic we would love to see that one but the blue player decides they actually like the arboreal side and they’re gonna slide it in right over there to that star system and then of course they’re gonna gain at one knowledge which rounds out their explore action and now for their second action they’re gonna go ahead and build on this turn again they’re gonna do it on the desert planet again actually which means it’s gonna be one metal and one energy in order for them to take their second metal collector and put it down on to the desert planet now you only get that bonus resource when there are opponents on the planet but if there was an opponent’s building on this planet when they put this down they would actually get the bonus resource it only activates if there are opponents there but if you’re also there you get bonuses which is nice and now they are gonna go ahead and use this fresh our roughneck if you remember the bottom says that when they do a build action they can gain one metal per metal collector that they already have in play so they can flip this over and that’s gonna immediately get them at these two metal back at this point blue Stern is now done but I think it’s now time to talk about why we are doing a lot of these things out here we’ve now seen almost all of the actions but this game is about getting points and we’re gonna get points through a couple different ways the main one is simply having a majority of control around one of the star systems or I guess as many of these as you can now each of these collectors have one control point in each of these colonies right down here offer two control points but they don’t actually generate you any resources and you may have noticed that they are significantly more expensive to place down on to the worlds when the game is over we are going to count up to the number of control points for each player and if you have the most control points around a star you will get six points second-most is going to get three points so we are definitely trying to do that and then that’s part of the reason why the blue player has no problem doubling up with these two metal collectors over here is because they are strengthening their hold on at the start although there is a lot of game to go and the game is actually gonna keep playing until one player has built all five of their colonies down on to the planet so nobody’s done any event just yet and once we do that to fifth colony from one player the game will end immediately so with all of that done we can now go over to the yellow player they’ve decided right off the bat to go with the build action again once again it using their iron hand which is going to allow them to pay one metal or one energy in order to build a metal collector and we see this red X which means that once they’ve used it this second time they’re actually gonna slide it into the bottom of the Associated allied deck so they no longer have access to it and it’s likely that we’ll see them again they are then going to spend the one metal just like last time to go ahead and take this metal collector here and if they decide to put it over here probably for similar reasons to us trying to spread out to potentially get bonuses when their opponents jump down and build buildings onto those planets for yellow second action they have decided to do the first harvest of the game as you can see this one’s pretty simple they gain one energy for each energy collector they have built and one metal for each metal collector they’ve built at the moment all they’ve built is two metal collectors so they’re gonna go ahead and take two metal and with that their turn is now over and we can go I do think it’s time for us to try out to this librarian and do a little bit of digging of course every time we do this we are gonna gain a knowledge which is vision points which is certainly a good thing to have so for a first action we will do an explore we’re gonna draw from the bag and we are again hoping to see oceanic tiles right here ooh nice we did get that the back side is a volcanic but we don’t really care about that let’s go ahead and throw this ocean down we know that our secret mission right here says that we need to have three or more oceanic planets in a single system which means we probably should put this over here into the system because as of the number plants so we have the highest likelihood of being able to get to more around the system before it gets all jammed up so let’s go ahead and put that over there and of course we gain one knowledge and now let’s go ahead and use our hola librarian if you remember it says that when we do the Explorer action we can then gain one knowledge or draw and play a planet ooh I don’t think I realized that was an ore but this is still pretty good let’s go ahead and flip it over we are going to gain one planet instead of taking the one victory point because again we are trying to dig for those oceanic tiles and oh nice oh my gosh it’s like sleeve the same one that’s cool let’s now go ahead and throw that over here right next to this planet obviously we’re just one away from being able to get a couple points for having that mission at the end of the game it is of course worth noting that we can draw more missions and in fact go over five which means we’d have to discard down some but we would likely try to keep that in our hand if it’s actually gonna generate us points so we now have oceanic planets in play and we see that we can rather cheaply get to energy collectors down onto those so I think let’s try and adapt for it so we’ll do the end annotation we’ll take this cube put it right there we now are going to be able to grab an ally but I think let’s go ahead and use this exploration league right now in the middle of our turn once again we know there are two oceanic build planets out in play so we can now take two resources of our choice and with this trashcan symbol it means that this card is removed from the game even though we currently make one metal and one energy when we do a harvest I think let’s go ahead and take to energy and the reason for that will become apparent when we go ahead and pick up one ally I really like the look of this fresh our general right here it says that when you do a build action you can gain two more allies or get five metal I think both of those are pretty great will likely do the five metal early on because we have so much energy right now so let’s go ahead and recruit this a line right here we see that we have uncovered the taskmaster which says that you can pay X amount of energy to gain X amount of metal oh pretty good if you make a lot of energy with that our turn is now over and it goes over to the blue player for their first action they are actually going to streamline right behind us they are probably looking to try and maintain control of this star system right here and we have these two oceanic planets so they are going to go ahead and adapt as their first action they’re gonna do it on to the ocean and now they are going to use their second tick of the exploration league in the same way this is going to give them two resources and they’ve decided they’re gonna grab a to energy for doing this and now they get to grab a new ally just like the yellow player a couple turns ago they have decided to push that lock they’re going to discard the top Dahlgren card it’s likely they are looking to conspire at some point somewhat soon they’re gonna put this to the back and now they’re forced to go ahead and take this one it is the info broker and it says that you can discard one mission to immediately gain four resources whether it be energy or metal that’s pretty flexible and the next one that just got revealed is the hacker which just says you can gain two missions when you do a conspire action which is already getting any mission so you can really dig deep into that stack and try and find cards that are gonna give you points this finishes out blues adaptation turn and for their second action they’ve decided to do a build they are gonna go ahead and build one of these energy collectors onto one of the oceanic planets that they were just able to adapt into and if you look down here it is just gonna be one metal and one energy in order to get this collector built and has to go down onto one of these two planets it doesn’t really matter which cell though plunk it right there and they’ve decided not to use their roughneck just yet this one would give them one metal per metal collector they already have they’re gonna save onto this into a moment when maybe they could do a lot more with it so with that their turn is now over and it goes over to the yellow player they decide they like the look of blues turn so much they are going to largely copy it they’re gonna begin by doing an adaptation they’re gonna take one of these cubes and put it down onto oceanic but they are gonna hold on to this Explorer league over here they haven’t used it at all yet and when they go ahead and do this they now can grab a new ally and they like the look of this algorithm Futurist down at the bottom it says that they’re gonna gain two energy per system where they share a planet with an opponent so there are no sharing planets just yet but maybe they’re planning on holding on to this one until it could really give them a bunch of energy and now for their second action that they are gonna do a build and it is going to be a energy collector onto a oceanic planet just like the blue player did on their turn so that is going to cost one energy and one of these metal to do and they decided even though they do get this perk when there is sharing amongst the buildings on in these systems they want other people to share into them as opposed to giving the bonus to other people so they’ll put that collector down right there and their return is now over it’s now our turn again and I think we should probably go ahead and do a conspire mostly because well we can have up to five of these mission cards and we only have two the other one we haven’t quite looked at yet just says a manifest destiny have one or more of these colonies in every one of the systems and that gives you two points and it’s certainly something that we would not mind working towards but this is still kind of the earlier stages of the game and doing engine building things like getting these collectors down is probably better than dropping these colonies right now so let’s go ahead and inspire and we’ll do one mission card and one ally so that we can maybe have a little bit more direction as far as the stuff that we are trying to do let’s go ahead and start by drawing the top mission card we see that it is perfect balanced we get four points at the end of the game if we have one colony one energy collector and one metal collector on the same planet that is interesting because while there are only three spots on each planet our opponents are not aware that we have this in front of us but we now that we have this are very incentivized to try n maybe finish out one planet before anybody jumps in so let’s now go ahead and grab a new ally when we look out here to all these options I think I like the ghetto over here because well it says that we can pay to knowledge which we do have to get eight resources which is a gigantic influx of resources for us it allow us to really throw those buildings out there especially those colonies which give us two control points and also dictate the end of the game we have already adapted three times so we have three more possible adaptations in the game you can of course keep adapting after that you will just recruit an ally but it’s less likely that you’re gonna want to do that so now seems like a decent time to take this which could be used twice like Oh although we would be throwing four points away to do that we’d hypothetically be making up for that with these resources so we’ll go ahead and grab this and the next one over here Santa’s on the bus hive it says you can pay three points to build a colony without paying anything else to the cost Wow so with this commerce hive our a DAP tation action is now done and I think let’s go ahead and do a build before we do that we’ll activate the general to get those five metal which will allow us to do quite a bit of building hopefully and I think that let’s go ahead and build a metal collector out onto the board trying to chase our perfect balance bonus right down here we are gonna have to do this on to the arboreal planet in fact this perfect balance can realistically only be done on arboreal or volcanic because it was the only two that can take both of the different types of collectors so we see this is going to cost us two energy and one of our metal to do a now let’s go ahead and put it right over here so we’re just one colony away from being able to lock it in those four points at the end of the game although unfortunately it is worth noting that it’s going to cost us for energy in three metal to actually get that colony down so that might be a little bit of work for us with that done our turn is now over and it goes over to blue you decided just like us they are gonna do a conspire action for the first action and they are gonna go ahead and draw one of these mission cards from the top of the deck and then they are going to recruit a new ally and they decide they are going to push their luck yet again we see this I’m gonna bust hive this is the one that allowed you to pay three points to put down a colony they don’t like the look of that but they are interested in actually spending some of their knowledge to get some bonuses because that’s what all of these ghetto allies do sell they’ll discard this one and they’re forced to take the next one that showed up this is the matrix hive and it says that you could spend one knowledge to just build a collector without paying the rest of its cost and well the blue player seems relatively happy with that so they can slide that in over there and but now they have to take another action they’ve decided for the second one that they will now adapt they’re gonna take their little cube and they’ve decided to adapt to frozen planets actually and once they’ve done this they can now grab a new ally over here and it’s gonna be this bounty hunter which will allow them to gain one energy for each mission card they have in their hand when they do a harvest action so this is gonna be the fourth of their allies again they can hold five of them at any time and speaking of allies they’ve decided to now activate this ghetto one right here just picked it up they’ve done an adaptation they can now pay one of their knowledge which is them losing one point at the end of the game but by doing this they can now build a collector without paying its regular cost they can flip this over and they’ve decided to do a metal collector and this is really unfortunate for us they don’t really know it but they are gonna go ahead and put this down right there they could of course put it down in this bond right here but this one nor to build a metal collector is just one in one but putting down anything on the arboreal planets is to energy and then one metal so this is more efficient use of that one victory point they threw away and it means that we’re gonna have to try a little bit harder on a different planet in order to try and get all three of those different types of buildings down unfortunately blue was realistically just looking for a good spot and they decided not to go over here because they know that the yellow player has this special ability that will gain them two extra energy every time they harvest when there is a system where there are somebody else on their planet so when they do this we do get a bonus resource as a consolation prize and I figured let’s just take one energy with that blue is done with our turn so it goes over to yellow they decide to start things off with in their first explore action of the game so they’re gonna go ahead and draw a tile out of the bag and it’s gonna be this one it has a desert side and an ocean side well they are adapted to the ocean side they are not particularly interested in desert so they are gonna put this ocean down but which star system do they actually want to put it down into it seems like they are actually most interested in putting it over here unfortunately for us we would love them to put it over there but the ocean planet is gonna go right there and of course they gain one knowledge for the end of that action and with their second action they’re gonna go ahead and build it’s gonna be one of these energy collectors and it’s going to go on to this oceanic planet right here that means it’s just gonna cost them one metal and one energy to do so and with that their turn is done because they don’t have any building allies they would potentially want to activate a charger and once again and I think let’s go ahead and start with the explore action we still have this Oh low librarian down here and well if we’re still working towards this perfect balance we pretty much need a new planet to work our selves into a position where we can actually have all three of those buildings so we are going to dig it into the bag we’re not sure how we’re gonna use the librarian just yet we’re gonna see what kind of tile we pull out and it’s gonna be a frozen and oceanic so realistically this is not what we were looking for well I guess the oceanic side is good because we can place it down such a way to satisfy this but it was not arboreal or volcanic but either way I think we are actually quite happy for this because when we go ahead and place this down on to that left MOU system we will be guaranteed these two points at the end of the game for the oceanic system mission that we have in front of us next we of course generate one knowledge for the Explorer action and now I think with this librarian like we don’t have to use this right now if we don’t want you but it does make sense I think for us to use it and instead of actually drawing a new card from the bag let’s go ahead and grab another knowledge we were able to grab this hive down here which says we can spend two of our knowledge points in order to gain eight resources and we can do that twice so I figure well if we’re gonna be burning through knowledge maybe we should just have a little bit more of it and we are pretty happy with that tile that we pulled sure it wasn’t arboreal or volcanic but it’s likely that we’ll bump into more of those as the game goes on although we know we have buried a couple of these volcanic ones and well every time we take an explorer action we get points as well so we’re definitely incentivized to keep doing that so we’re having now spent at this one right here and we have another action available to us and you know what I think let’s go ahead and build onto that oceanic planet that we just put down because well it’s currently open so if we get down there and somebody else builds there we get a bonus and who we put down those oceanic planets on the last round and then to both of our opponents jumped on those before we could so when we do the build on the oceanic planet this is just gonna cost us one energy and one metal and it’s gonna let us put another one of these energy collectors out there and again at the end of the game we’re gonna get points not only for having the most control points around a star but also these second most so I think getting in here is a reasonable idea even though the blue player already has a serious foothold on the control of this specific system that finishes out our build action and I think let’s go ahead and use our general right here and well instead of taking the five metal maybe we should go ahead and grab allies because we don’t have that many right now and they really do give us a lot of benefit to doing these other actions as we’re playing the game also we have this one down here which is gonna allow us to spend a couple points in order to get eight resources of different types so let’s go ahead and do the Allies instead of the metal first off I think I’d like to have another one of these explore allies but I don’t really love this top one right here you see it says that we can pay three energy in order to get two points that is nice but we don’t really have a crazy energy engine going just yet but we do know that we’re gonna want to explore and it’s good to get these bonus actions so let’s go ahead and discard this to the back and we are now forced to take this top one right here we see that it is a hola dignitary and we can now gain a ooh gain an ally and two mission cards Wow every time we explore at least the next two times we explore that is certainly a really nice incentive for us to keep exploring another thing that is very likely for us to do soon is the build action so let’s take a look at this one right here it says that we can pay X amount of energy to gain X amount of metal and right now we build two metal and two energy so we are very balanced which means this card does not do very much for us so now with the heck let’s go ahead and roll the dice again we’ll discard this card and we’ll take the next one I hear it’s the engineer okay we’ve seen this one before it says that we are going to gain one metal for each of our energy colonies in play that’s actually pretty good for us considering we are balanced and with that our turn is now over and it goes over to the blue player they’ve assigned it for the first action they’re gonna do an explore so they’ll pull a tile out of the bag we see that it is arboreal and it is also this a gaseous type of planet we haven’t seen any of those yet and they decided they’re gonna go with arboreal and they’re gonna place it right over into this system which right now only has a green planets in it and they also are gonna generate one knowledge for doing that explore action and now for their second action they want to adapt they are currently adapted for all of the habitats that are out here but they’re gonna go ahead and go into volcanic kind of assuming that those may come out soon but the big reason that they’re doing this is so that they can use this matrix hive Ally down here this is the one that is going to allow them once again to pay one of their knowledge in order to build a collector of metal or of energy they decide they are going to indeed use this right now which is gonna slide it to the bottom of this deck it is going to lose them one of the victory points and they’re gonna take yet another one of their metal collectors and they’re gonna put down right onto this planet they just pulled out because again it is three resources to play on these planets that can take both different types of collectors so seem like a pretty good deal to them at the time and as the end part of an adapt they can pick up a new ally considering they now have a crazy metal production they’ve decided to grab this Olo machinist which will allow them to pay three metal in order to gain two of those knowledge of victory points it’s now the yellow player’s turn and they’re going to start off by doing a conspire action they’re gonna draw just one of these mission cards from the top and now they are going to recruit an ally and they’ve decided they like the idea of this Oh low industrialist down at the bottom it says that when they do an explorer they can then pay one metal or one energy in order to build a energy collector and for the second action they are simply going to do a harvest this is going to generate them to metal and to energy unfortunately they cannot use their Futurist yet because again it says they have to you they get to gain two energy per system where they share a planet with an opponent’s and even though pink and blue are sharing over here yellow is not quite doing that just yet so they’re gonna get their resources and that will finish out their turn it’s once again our turn and I think considering we have this dignitary right here exploring seems like a really good idea not only will this potentially find another one of those arboreal planets so we can start trying to get a foothold on in order to try and get or perfect balance that you’ve been done or we might find something like the volcanic planets that nobody can actually work into and trying to adapt into it I think it’s just gonna increase the number of options we have it’s also going to get us more knowledge and because of the dignitary we’ll be able to get another ally and a couple more mission cards which will allow us to get an even better idea of trying to figure out what we want to do for points at the end of the game so let’s go ahead and start by exploring we of course reach into the big bag of tiles and we now pull out this one ooh nice it is volcanic or a desert planet and I think we are definitely interested in having a volcanic planet come out because this one just like the arboreal planets can take both types of collectors so now we need to think about where we want to stick this planet we need to put it in one of the star systems and it should be obvious that once the star system has six different planets around it then it is maxed out and nobody can add more planets and realistically if we are hoping to build on this relatively soon we want to put it in a system where we are certainly competing well for having the majority of stuff around it so when we look over here we’ve got two but the blue player also has two and the yellow has one and here the yellow has two and we have one in fact we’re not doing a very good job of actually getting these control points out there but I think for now maybe let’s go ahead and put the volcanic planet over there for that explore action we also gain a knowledge and now let’s go ahead and use the dignitary right here like I said before this is gonna allow us to gain an ally and then we’re also gonna get to draw two mission cards so let’s go ahead and see what the allies look like looking over to the fish ours it looks like the iron hand is back up and this is the one that the yellow player used quite well to get a couple of these really cheap metal extractors out on to the planets and I think we like the look of that even though we actually already have one of these fresher build allies in our area we’re allowed to have both of them and we just had to pick and choose which one we’re gonna use when we do build actions and lastly the dignitary and lastly the dignitary allows us to draw two more of these mission cards which brings us up to five so if we gain any more later on in the game we will have to discard some so let’s take a look we have ve intrepid it says three points if we have a colony in four or more types of planets well this is really great because we actually already have manifest destiny which gives us two points if we have one or more colonies in every system out there so we’re definitely gonna probably want to make both of these happen they synergize really well with each other and the other one says contractor three points if we have all of our structures and play well that one might be harder to actually pull off but for now we can go ahead and put these into our hand and we have one more action to take considering we have all this knowledge and not that many resources especially considering we are now actively looking forward to getting some of these colonies down onto planets I think we should do the adapt action because it’ll let us go over here so we can now build on that volcanic planet and hopefully more of those will pop out but more importantly it will allow us to use at this ally right here which is gonna make us pay too of this knowledge so that doesn’t cost us two points but we then get to gain eight resources and it’s a mixture between the metal and the energy when we consider that when we use this engineer to do a build action we will also be able to gain metal equal to the number of the energy extractors we have out there I think it makes sense for us to go ahead and take five energy because well we will definitely be needing to use it and only three metal we already had quite a metal metal already and when we look down here this is gonna gain us more metal I guess at this point we are even with the amount of resources we have and I guess we look over here to the colony on the volcanic planet it does need more metal than it needs energy so maybe instead I will get rid of one of these energies and bring another metal into our area we of course need to flip over this Ally card and we now of course get you taken an ally from the central area because of the adapt action when we look back out here it looks like our old friend the librarian is once again an option for us to grab this one gains us one knowledge or an extra planet placement down when we do and explore and I think this is gonna be great for us to have with the addition of this Ally we now have five allies and five missions so we are at our limit on both of those I know we now have two allies that both help for exploration but I think we can probably hold on to the dignitary for a little bit until we’re in a position where we want more allies and potentially to mill through to get some slightly better missions for us although right now I’m pretty happy with the majority of the stuff we’re gunning for with all that completed our turn is now over and blue now gets to go they decide to start off with a build action they want to get their final metal collector out onto the board and they decided to use their frozen world adaptation in order to put it down right here this means it’s gonna cost them one metal as well as one energy and when they place this building down here since we are also around this planet we get a bonus of one resource of our choice we could take one or the other and I don’t know let’s go ahead and just take an energy to even things out a little bit next as part of blues build action they decide to use this ally right here the roughneck it’s going to gain them one metal for each of their metal collection colonies that they have and they now have all five of them out so by using this it’s going to go back to the pile and it’s gonna generate for them five metal for their second action they’ve decided to go exploring let’s see what tile they pull out of the bag it looks like it is frozen or arboreal and they have decided they would like a frozen planet to go out and they look around here and they think that it probably makes the most sense further put this frozen planet over here into a system that already has one they then gain a knowledge and they now want to use their machinist right here and down at the bottom we see that it says they can spend three metal in order to just gain to knowledge immediately so they will flip this over three of their five metal will go away and it they’ll gain two more knowledge which is of course two visscher points as well they have now completed their turn so yellow now gets to go they decide to start things off with an explorer action most likely because of this industrialist Ollo ally they have right down here so they draw a planet from the bag it is arboreal or gaseous and they decide they want to put a gaseous planet down actually and when they look out to the board they think that they like adding it to this system right over here they of course gain one acknowledge and now they can use their industrious ol Oh a line right down here that says they can spend one REE in order to build one of their energy collectors they decide to flip this over and they will actually spend this energy right here in order to take this one out here and they’re gonna put it down onto this arboreal planet that doesn’t mean they’re sharing with the blue player so blue will immediately gain a bonus resource and they decide to take a medal for the second action they decide they like that so much they’re just gonna do it again they’re going to explore by taking a tile from the bag and it looks like it’s gonna be a ice planet or an arboreal planet and they decide they like the idea of putting an arboreal planet down right into a system right here they gain a knowledge for the explore and now they will use the other side of this industrialist to once again pay one resource in order to put an energy collector out in this case they decide one metal is good enough and they’ll go ahead and put this energy collector out onto this new planet it’s once again our turn and we’ve got a really good one lined up for us we have six energy and seven metal and I think what we should try and do is fill up entirely that volcanic planet that is out on the right most solar system that means we need to build three different buildings with our two actions so if we do build it twice and at least one of those involves the iron hand this one allows us to actually get collectors down as bonus actions so we should be able to make this work let’s go ahead and start our first build by getting the first colony of the game down and we look over here we see that it’s going to cost us three energy and a four metal in order to do this so we can go ahead and spend all of that right now and when we drop it down on to this volcanic planet we now see that we have one two three four control points for this system and we are gonna take a dominant lead actually in controlling the system by the end of this turn before we finish out the action we’re going to activate iron hand so we can pay one resource in order to build this one metal extractor so we’ll flip that over let’s go ahead and I think let’s spend this one energy in order to get this metal extractor out there we’ve course drop it down onto the volcanic planet so now all we need is an energy extractor there in order to make that hidden mission work we took it as four extra points at the end of the game for a second action let’s once again build when we look over to the volcanic planet we see that it’s going to be one energy and to metal to build here and at this time we are of course going to build the energy extractor we need we go ahead and put this down on to the volcanic planet which means we now have one two three four five six control power over this system compared to the next player being just to control power from the yellow player but as you can see the control power can shift drastically within given terms especially now that we are all starting to get a reasonable resource collection engines up so that we can get these colonies down and the moment we do this we look into our hand and we are happy to know that the perfect balance has been achieved but we’re just gonna have to hold onto this until the end of the game when we actually score it four points at this point our turn isn’t quite over because we can now activate either one of these fresh our a lines we have in front of us and I think let’s go ahead and do the engineer this is the one that says we’re gonna gain one metal for each of our energy collectors that we have in play so we can flip that over we see we now have three energy collectors in play so we’re gonna get three metal back and with that are very large turn is now over four blues first action they’ve decided to conspire they are going to take one mission off of the top of the deck and they are also going to take an ally they could have also taken just two missions and no allies but at the moment they decided they liked the look of the fresh are general this being the one that allows them to gain two allies or five metal when they do a build action as part of their conspire action they decided they do want to use the info broker they have in front of them this allows them to discard one of their missions in order to gain four different resources so they need to take a look at their missions and decide which one to lose they decide to discard this one and now need to figure out what four resources they’re gonna grab they decided to keep it easy and just grab for energy next up they are gonna take a build action and they’ve decided to take one of their colonies and they’re gonna put it down onto this frozen planet right here when we look at the frozen planets call any cost we see is going to be for energy and three metal so they go ahead and spend their three metal as well as the for energy they just grabbed and they are now going to activate their general right here and this is going to get for them five metal immediately so the flip of this over and now their turn is it’s now the L players turn and for their first action they will adapt they’re gonna grab one of their cubes and they’ll be the first ones to go with the gaseous style of planet and they of course get to draft one of the allies from the center here into the area when they do an adaptation and they like the look of the taskmaster down here we see this one is gonna allow them to pay X amount of energy to gain X amount of metal and right now they don’t have much of either of those which is why they have decided for their second action they are going to do a harvest now first things first they’re gonna use their first side of the Futurist you see it gives them a to energy per system where they share one planet with an opponent well unfortunately for them that is only one system at the moment but they really still like the idea of getting that to energy because when we look out here we see that yellow is sharing just up there so they’re going to get to energy for that as well as for more energy for their collectors and then to metal with that their turn is done and it comes back to us when we look down into our resource Bank we see that we’re once again and getting sort of depleted and I figure let’s go ahead and just go crazy and use this commerce hive once again in order to do that we are going to need to do an adapt action and right now all we have is desert and gashes that are still available to us and well there is one desert with one spot left on it and it was a one gaseous with three spots left on it so I figured that’s probably the better thing for us to adapt into and once we do this we will also go ahead and use this card which will get rid of it and go it’ll go back to the pile we’re gonna spend two of our knowledge victory points and we can gain eight resources I figured let’s go ahead and keep our resources relatively even once again so once we went ahead and took the six energy and the two metal we can now take our second action I figure since we have all these resources right now we may as well get another one of these colonies out and we know that we are incentivized over here to try and have our colonies on four or more types of the planets and we are also incentivized to have our colonies in every single system out there on the the center of the board I think all of this combined it means we should go ahead and put it down onto one of the oceanic systems on the leftmost side if we look over here we see it’s gonna cost us two of our energy to do that and then it’s also gonna cost us five of our metal at the moment Blue has three control points we have one and yellow has one so I figure let’s go ahead and put it over here it gives yellow a slight advantage but we’re also kind of competing with blue in this area so once we put this down the yellow player does get to take a free resource and they decide to grab a metal and now let’s finish out our build action by using the second activation of the engineer which once again says that we can gain one metal for each of our energy collectors in play so that is going to get us three metal with that done our turn is now complete and blue can now go for their first action they’ve decided to harvest which is going to get them five metal and a1 energy and they want to use this bounty hunter down here we see that it says they are going to be able to gain one energy per mission that they have in their hand right now they have three missions in their hand so that is going to be three more energy available to them and for the second action they decide to build and just like us they’re going to get their second colony down onto the map and they decide to put it way over here now this is an arboreal planet which means it’s gonna cost them for energy and three metal in order to actually pay for this so unfortunately that is most of their energy but they still have lots of metal in tow and since they built on a planet that had at least one opponent that means that everyone who was already built on that planet gets a bonus including the blue player so they’re gonna get essentially a rebate of one energy back and the yellow player is happy because they get to choose to grab a metal with that build action coming to a close the blue player decides they’re gonna activate their general a second time this is the one that lets them gain two allies or five metal and even though they have all this metal they decide they are still going to respect it and they’re gonna take five more metal perhaps they have a plan up their sleeve for yellows first action they’ve decided to conspire they are going to draw this hacker as one ally we see that this is going to allow them to gain two missions when they do a conspire action and then they also get to draw a mission from the top of the deck and at once they do this they’ve decided they do want to actually activate this immediately after this action resolves so they’ll flip it over and draw two more missions this of course means they now have way too many missions at seven so they’re gonna discard these two and keep these five for the second action they’ve now decided to build and it’s gonna be their first colony they want to put this down onto an oceanic planet and if you look over here it says that it’s gonna be to energy and five metal in order to do this but they have decided they are also going to use at this taskmaster alley right here which says when they do a build action they can spend X amount of energy to gain X amount of metal so they can flip this over and since they make so much more energy than they do metal if they decided just to pay for this entire colony with this energy so that is seven energy gone there are three oceanic planets to choose from and they decide to go right down here and when they do that of course the blue player gets a bonus resource and they’ve decided to grab an energy with that placement yellow has three control points blue has three as well as us so we are all tied in control for this system it’s now once again our turn and we still have a decent amount of materials in our bank right here and well when we look over to the mission cards we’re working towards we know we want to have at least one colony in all three of the systems we have two of our colonies out right now but the middle system we have not gone into and we know that we want to have a colony on four different types of planets so I think right now let’s go ahead and send it over to the Frozen Planet and when we look down here we see that’s going to cost us four of our energy and then it’s also going to cost us three of our metal so we can go ahead and throw this out onto the board and it certainly makes sense for us to put it right down here because not only are we gonna give the blue opponent one free resource but we get a free resource back blue decides to take an energy and I think we should take an energy as well and that’s because after we do this we are also going to want to activate our iron hand right here this is gonna allow us to spend one resource in order to build one of our metal collectors so once we’ve used this it goes back into the pile and now let’s go ahead and I think we’re gonna suspend our metal because we’re gonna make a lot more metal when we do a collection process so we’ll spend in the metal right now and that’s gonna be able to put this out onto the board when we look out to the board we know that we have adaptability in every single planet except for desert planets of course there is no metal to collect on gaseous planets or on these ocean planets which is definitely a bummer because I’d love to put it right there and get a bonus resource but that’s not available to me and we still have a really strong presence over here so I think we should place it down here and we have the option of putting it on to either of these planets or this frozen one but I think blue is doing slightly better than yellow at this point so let’s go ahead and put this right here yellow is gonna get a bonus resource they’ve decided to take a energy for doing this and now we are done with that build it’s now the blue players turn and they are feeling like they really need more of these missions now that the game is really getting underway and colonies are coming down quickly they’re gonna do a conspire action and they’re simply gonna draw two missions from the top of the deck and they do have this info broker where they could discard a mission in order to get four resources but they’re gonna have to take a look at these real quick and decide if that actually makes sense for them to do they decide that they do indeed want to discard one of their missions probably because it’s unlikely for them to actually fulfill it and once they do this they will get rid of this ally right here as well and that they can now take four resources and I think it’ll be no surprise to know that they are gonna grab for energy because they are just drowning in metal now it’s now time for their second action and they have decided to build which is not surprising with all of those resources and they are gonna do so on an oceanic planet this is gonna cost them two of their energy and it’s also gonna cost them five of their metal to do because they are gonna build another one of these colonies the game has definitely shifted to the point where engines are running somewhat well and now getting these big control point buildings down onto planets makes a lot of sense and they’ve decided they’re gonna put it down right over here because once they put it down here the yellow player is going to get a bonus resource but they will also get a bonus resource because of the world sharing in this case both yellow and blue decide to grab another energy yellows first action will be to do an explore they pull a tile out of the bag we see that it is desert or gaseous they like the idea of gaseous going down even though I guess we can also build on those but they’re gonna put the gaseous planet right there on this system kind of scooting it out of the way they will of course generate a knowledge for doing this and they’ve decided to explore again and for both of these they don’t actually have any of their allies who benefit them but they must have some mission reasons why they are doing this so when they explore again they’re gonna go into the bag pull out let’s see this tile right here it is arboreal or desert and they’re gonna put the arboreal one down right there they of course generate one more knowledge for doing this and that completes their rather quick turn I’m just doing those two Explorer actions and it can now go down to us looking down here we see that we are very low on resources with just these two energy we have two of these colonies left over and right now we really do want to get another colony down so that we can satisfy this mission over here which will get us three points if we have a colony down on four of the different planet types and the other thing is looking ahead we can see that the blue player also has two colonies but they already have a mess of resources we can see that it’s very likely that they have enough stuff in order to drop both of their colonies on their next turn and again the game ends immediately once one player has all of their colonies down even if it is in the middle of a turn so considering that I think it probably makes sense for us to try and make this turn about getting this colony on the board but before we can actually do that we’re gonna need resources so let’s go ahead and do a harvest action we look down here we’re gonna get it for metal for our collectors up here and then our energy collectors over here will get us three energy so now we have quite a bit to play with and let’s see where we want to actually put this colony down we know we want to go into four different types of planets and we already have a colony on a volcanic planet on an oceanic planet and a frozen planet so that leaves gaseous and arboreal leftover for us to figure out where to go looking over to the left hand system we see that there are no arboreal or gaseous planets at all so we are not interested in placing over there down here we see that there are over oil planets and right now we have one two three four control power in here the yellow player has one two three and blue has one two three as well and in this situation we are currently getting six points for having the most and when two people tie for a second place they just get one point each so that’s a pretty big swing gap down there despite the fact that we only have one more control point than both of them and then going up here we have let’s see one two three four five six control power the blue player has one two three four and the yellow player only has two so that’s a gap of two verses gap of one right here All Things Considered I figure we should make the one gap into a three gap to make it a little bit more likely that we keep this one a two gap is still not super great over there but we’ll plunk this one down right here into the arboreal planet looking at the player board that’s gonna cost us for energy and three of our metal so that is gonna leave us with not a whole lot left over both of our allies are associated with the Explorer action so we don’t get to activate either of those and with that our turn is now over so it’s now time for blue to take their turn and they’re looking around as well and they can see that with only one colony left for us although just these two resources they could tell that we could easily harvest again and then place our last colony on our last turn so they figure if that happened they wouldn’t get another turn so they should be in control of the endgame they are gonna indeed build it twice getting both of these colonies down on to the planets out here they just need to figure out now what the best way to place them is for them looks to them like the best thing for them is to put one of these down on this arboreal planet right here generating a resource for the yellow player not that it matters because they’re not gonna get another turn but these are a tie breaker so they will go ahead and take this energy and with the other one they’re gonna place up here which is again where the yellow player is and yellow will take one more energy and with that last colony being placed the game now immediately ends and it’s time to actually count up and see who got the most points here we can now see all of the missions that our opponents were working towards throughout the game as well as how all of the systems ended when the game was up let’s go ahead and score the missions first and we’ll begin with the blue player over here the first one that they have is our boreal system they will get two points if they are three or more of these arboreal planets in a single system and that did indeed happen part of that was also the blue players meddling they definitely tried to make that happen for them the next one right here is says expansionism two points if they have a structure on six or more planets and let’s see they have a structure on one two three four five six seven eight planets actually so they definitely more than made up for those points now we have adaptable this says that they’re going to get two points if they have adapted to build on all of the planet types and unfortunately for blue they have adapted to five out of the six they never actually got around to doing Cash’s planet so those two points are not going to be available to them and lastly here we have ecology they’ll get two points if they have one or more of the energy collectors in every system and in this case the blue player also did not make this happen they only got one energy collector out for this entire game actually so this can get discarded and they only got four points for emissions next we can do us and we are quite familiar with these the first one was two points for having one or more of our colonies in every system we definitely had that one going for us next is the perfect balance that’s one of each type of building on a single planet which we also made happen next we have the Oceanic system two points because this system has three oceans associated with it this one right here says intrepid this is the one that is going to give us three points for having a colony on four different types of planets which we were able to do when we landed on that last move of ours and this one right here says contractor three points if we have all of our structures and playing and in this case we were not able to make that happen we actually had four structures left over when the game was over so we do not get these three points and now we can look at the yellow players missions this first one right here says individual industrialism sorry it’s two points if they have one or more of their um their metal collectors in every system and in this case they were one short they had a metal collector here and here but they’re never able to actually make it happen over here you can’t even have metal collectors on these ocean planets and the blue player is the only one who ever adapted to the desert so they are not gonna get these two points next up it says isolationist they will get four points if they have their colonies in only one system and in this case they only built one colony it was over there so that is gonna satisfy these four points which is quite a lot now we have the stellar cartography they will get three points if they have two or more systems that each have six planets and this is the reason that they did that last turn where they explored twice each of those exporters gave them a knowledge which is worth a point but that also capped out both of these systems so they both have six plants around them so that is going to be three more points for the yellow player now we have the ambassador they will two points if they have three unused assistants I’m sorry allies at the end of the game and they indeed do all three of these are left over in their play area so that’s gonna be two more points and lastly there is coexistence then we get two points if they’re sharing five or more planets and when you look out on to the different systems they’re sharing one two three four five six actually so they more than made up for that and let’s see all told that’s gonna be seven eight nine ten eleven Wow they got the same number of points from missions as we did lastly it’s time to score points for the control majorities in each of the systems we can start over here we see that Blue has one two three four five control points in here we have one two three and the yellow player also has one two three so in this case the blue player is gonna get six points for this and since we tie with the yellow player for the second place here we are each gonna get one point next we have this middle system here we have one two three four five six control points in here the blue player has one two three four five so they’re coming in second any of the yellow player has one two three so that means that we have the most so we are going to get six points and then blue is in second so they are going to get three points and now we have this last system where we have one two three four five six and the blue player has one two three four five six as well that last placement they put down essentially tied things up here denying three points for us in this system so with that we are both tying for first which means both of us are gonna get three points and that is it for scoring and now all we have to do is add up the points over on the left the blue player came in with a even 20 points we ended the game with 23 and lastly the yellow player came in with 18 so that is the final scores we have 18 20 23 a relatively close game and that completes a full three player game of horizons well I hope you enjoyed this playthrough my main goal here was to try and show not only the variety of things that are pushing and pulling on each player as they try to figure out what they’re gonna do with their turn but also I try to show how the players need to maximize the use of these Ally carts they have in front of themselves in order to do well in the game and I think I did an okay job of that there were definitely a few advisors left on some of the characters that maybe I should have drafted them lightly differently because they were associated with actions that I then found myself not actually as interested in doing once the game got really close to to the end there but in the end the scores were relatively close and I think it showed a variety of different ways that you can get points as you’re playing the game like it seemed like you know we had a ton of those secret objectives cashed in and so did the yellow player the blue player did not do anywhere near as many of those but they did very well as far as conquering and getting influence around those star systems so they ended up coming in second and I think that means that he’ll this is obviously at the kind of game where you don’t know if you’re gonna be winning or not until you actually get to the end of I had a feeling that the yellow player was going to come in third but you know having the scores be that tight shows that they were not drastically far behind and I think if things had gone slightly differently with especially a couple of the influence drops out on to the different star systems then the scores could have shifted quite a bit and that also goes to show that this is one of those games where the game could just end suddenly you need to really pay attention to the pacing of the game and I think the yellow player maybe didn’t quite start throwing influence out onto the star systems as quickly as they should have they maybe didn’t realize the game was get it as close to ending as it actually was they only had one of their colonies down but because of that one mission they had they actually got quite a few points for just having all their colonies in one specific system although perhaps they should have gotten another colony in that system to wrest control of it and get more points for it but at the end of the day I think it was a pretty good representation of how horizons plays and the various things that you can do while you’re playing it and I think that wraps up everything I have to say about this playthrough as always I’d like to thank everyone who’s been supporting this channel through patreon including all of these producer level pledges if you 1. Hey I'm just a little confused about how the ally works at 9:33. Dunno if you used it wrong or I missed something. I thought when you take an action you can then also use the ally ability but instead of building and then using the iron hand to build again, you only used his ability. Not sure just looking for clarification.

  2. Good recording as usual. I think your rule mistake of granting bonuses to players already there kind of makes more sense than the actual rule. I think it evened out in the end though. Any thoughts to why it works like this? I can imagine it's to balance things a bit more for players that are behind or to prevent a partnership with a 3rd party left out.
Eitherway, I've backed this. Looks like a fun and relatively short + simple 3x game. Something missing from my collection.
