Silicon Valley Company Preps Affordable Flying Car for 2019

August 23, 2019

HAVE DEPICTED FLYING CARS.. IN A FUTURE THAT HAS YET TO ARRIVE. UNTIL NOW. FOR THE PAST NINE YEARS: DEVELOPERS HAVE BEEN WORKING QUIETLY ON THE PROJECT.. IN A SECRET SILICON VALLEY LOCATION. CBS NEWS SENIOR WEST COAST CORRESPONDENT JOHN BLACKSTONE HAS COVERED EVERY MAJOR SILICON VALLEY INNOVATION. HE JOINS US NOW WITH A FIRST LOOK — AT THE FLYING CAR. WE KNOW THAT UBER, GOOGLE AND A NUMBER OF OTHER COMPANIES ARE WORKING ON PLANS OR PROTOTYPES FOR FLYING CARS. BUT STILL I WAS SKEPTICAL WHEN I GOT THE INVITATION TO GO TO AN UNMARKED BUILDING IN PALO ALTO TO SEE A FLYING VEHICLE THAT COULD BE ON SALE BY NEXT YEAR. MARCUS LENG CALLS HIS INVENTION “A PERSONAL AVIATION VEHICLE”: AN ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT — SO EASY TO FLY YOU, DON’T NEED A PILOT’S LICENSE. (MARCUS LENG) 13:47:37 When you press the thumb stick to climb with this you have absolute full control LENG GAVE CBS THIS MORNING A FIRST LOOK AT THE SECRET SILICON VALLEY FACILITY WHERE THE CRAFT HE CALLS “BLACKFLY” IS BEING BUILT. HIS BREAKTHROUGH INVENTIONâ (MARCUS) “What we’re gonna do is just gonna run this.” (JB AND LENG ALMOST BLOWN OFF FEET) âIS A SMALL BUT EXTREMELY POWERFUL ELECTRIC MOTOR. (MARCUS) “This can produceâ” (JB AND LENG ALMOST BLOWN OVER AGAIN) LENG CLAIMS THE EIGHT-MOTOR, SINGLE-SEAT AIRCRAFT CAN FLY ITSELF, LIKE A DRONE, THAT’S HOW IT WAS TESTED BEFORE ANYBODY GOT ON BOARD. 13:45:51 We first flew 10,000 miles. We did a thousand plus flights FOR DECADES FLYING CARS HAVE BEEN PART OF A FUTURE THAT HAS NEVER ARRIVED. 15:10:35. (WILLIE TURNER, HILLER AVIATION MUSEUM): “this was “The Commuter” – this would have been in everybody’s garage.” THE HILLER AVIATION MUSEUM IN SILICON VALLEY DISPLAYS SEVERAL FLYING CARS THAT JUST DIDN’T GET OFF THE GROUND. (WILLIE TURNER, HILLER AVIATION MUSEUM): the technology wasn’t there. NOW COMPANIES AROUND THE WORLD ARE DEVELOPING FLYING CARS. GOOGLE CO- FOUNDER LARRY PAGE IS SUPPORTING TWO FLYING CAR PROJECTS. UBER IS WORKING ON FLYING TAXIS. MARCUS LENG WANTS “BLACKFLY” TO BE ON SALE NEXT YEAR SO ANYONE CAN BUY IT: 13:53:17 JB Q: Are we talking price of a luxury Mercedes? A: Price of an SUV. Q: Price of an SUV. 14:16:31 JB Q: How long will it take to learn to fly one of these you know? (ALAN EUSTACE): in the simulator in five minutes. ALAN EUSTACE, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT OF KNOWLEDGE AT GOOGLE, IS ON BLACKFLY’S THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND KNOWS ABOUT FLIGHT. HE CARRIED BY BALLOON INTO THE STRATOSPHERE THEN PARACHUTED NEARLY 136,000 FEET BREAKING A WORLD ALTITUDE RECORD IN 2014. HE’S ALMOST AS EXCITED ABOUT BLACKFLY: (ALAN EUSTACE)14:09: I’ve noticed in my career that things go from impossible to inevitable in a very short period of time. IT’S NO LONGER TECHNOLOGY STANDING IN THE WAY HE SAYS, BUT RATHER REGULATIONS GOVERNING FLIGHT. (ALAN EUSTACE)14:21:20 there’s regulatory issues to deal with but if we could get through UNDER CURRENT FEDERAL REGULATIONS BLACKFLY IS CLASSIFIED AS AN ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT MEANING IT CAN’T FLY AT NIGHT OR OVER URBAN AREAS. IT CAN TRAVEL JUST 25 MILES ON ITS ELECTRIC BATTERIES. BUT THE JOY OF FLIGHT SEEMS UNLIMITED. (MARCUS LENG) 13:48: 25: “They’re just D THIS IS CALLED “OPENER” AND JUST IN THE LAST HOUR OR SO “OPENER” REVEALED THAT ITS MAJOR INVESTOR IS NONE OTHER THAN LARRY PAGE, CO-FOUNDER OF GOOGLE.

  1. A lot of people here are talking about engine failures. First, this thing doesn't have engines. It has eight electric motors. If one of the motors fails, the control scheme should be able to be adjusted for limited continued flight followed by a safe descent.

  2. Those cars will cover the sky and may fall on your head. P.S: And let’s don’t forget about birds, they definitely won’t like these cars.

  3. Why? There is so much wrong with this. Literally imagine 100 million americans flying these at the same time. It would be a disaster, some would crash into homes, buildings and into each other. What an idiot.

  4. Can only fly 25 miles….not good enough. What if you wanted to go 100 miles or more? Someone travelling by car would get to a 100 mile destination way, way quicker. The flying car guy would have to recharge 3 times lol

  5. I'd like the one with the aliens technology please…
quiet, no need to worry about getting people's head chopped off, and easy to maneuver.

Oh hey at least what people from the 20s dreamt off has finally come true. A flying car! Too bad they can't see it.

  6. working with batteries and petrol is not great…still with these ! do something new engines .. like ion or magnet engines or wave engines ( like aliens technology)

  7. flying cars? nah, that just look like a flying coffin to me. This thing made flying a drone in urban area doesn't look that bad.

  8. This is all very old Technology. This tech would have been the norm starting in the 60's. Electrogravitic drives and supplementary systems were discovered in the mid 50's. The national security state and cooperative "cold war" allowed for the hindrance and suppression of significant advancement in energy technology in the private and public sectors. Any Invention or discovery outside of big industry that would threaten the status quo of a hydrocarbon based paradigm was siezed or destroyed.

  9. Self piloted flying cars will NEVER be a thing. You’re pretty dumb to think that it could be. Mother fuckers can hardy drive without killing someone and you think they’re going to let people fly?

  10. Anyone with a lick of sense can see that this idea is both impractical and dangerous as all get-out.

…and yeah – many new inventions that dealt with moving people from one place to another were derided when they were first brought to people's attention – both railroads and aircraft were just a few – but this one creates more problems than it solves.

    Think it through, or don't…

  11. しな そらとぶくるま はやく のうきまにあわせろ ことわる ぜいいん あたま ほね けずる

  12. Hope these become mainstream soon! I hate being on the ground stuck in stupid traffic with other cars. Let's utilize the air space!

  13. BULL CRAP, you don't need computers to make flying cars, they wanted computers so as to control people and where they go in them.

  14. It's an amphibious ultralight folks, no license is needed cuz you are allowed to fly in your back yard or maybe across a small river.

  15. There's never something for nothing in life and especially not aviation if it doesn't require a license you're limited to daytime, good weather and unpopulated areas it's a toy.

  16. The people who made Back to the Future: wat, why now, WHY NOW, WHY NOT IN 2015 aggressive screeching

  17. how is the pilot positioned? first they sit like apollo astronauts? then when forward flight how is the position? in hover?

  18. "The battery's almost dead on my flying car but I think I can still make it to the 7-Eleven and back…"

  19. I'd love to have one to commute to work. The straight shot is nearly have the paved road distance. Put a gyrocopter blade on it so you crash safer.

  20. question is how do you move a 23 foot trailer full of goods at 500 feet in the air without wings? i am in the midst of that design lol.

  21. Now add two of those feet jet packs to it in the right place, for amazing bursts of speed, and optional use during flight

  22. If that is a car, where are the wheels? Looks fun though, but 25 miles only! 100 miles and it would sound a lot more interesting. Batteries will improve, but 4 times? Maybe just an expensive toy!
